The Long Story...

[How we do it and what are the benefits]

Money, money, money, money, money, money, money...

It may well be that you can divide web design into the very amateur on the one hand and the very expensive on the other...

There are good reasons for the cost: web design  can be fiddly and demanding work, it can (sometimes) require a great deal of technical skill, and just a few hours' custom programming will cost hundreds - unless you offshore your financial details to some country you've hardly heard of.  And while the best amateur sites are among the best sites ever - many more betray a lack of commitment or skill, with dead links, systems that don't work well, or don't work properly (or just don't work).

And yet... it's possible to whip up a simple web site (say one page of basic details) in ten minutes flat.  So where is all this cost coming from?

Eliminating Cost with the 20:80 Value Rule

Web hosting (keeping your site online 24/7 via high-speed network links) used to be expensive.  Now it's cheap.  Why?  Because the once-complex processes have been standardized and "commoditized".

Tender Soft Ltd's mission is to commoditize the process of web design too, to strip it down to the basics and deliver a product that is simple, reliable, reproducible and cheap.

Many sites are over-engineered.  It's clear why.  The client's been tempted: why not spend all the budget on fun stuff that you can see and enjoy yourself?  (After all, it's for you isn't it?  You're paying for it!)  And the vendor may be tempted to over-specify and bulk up the job, and the fee.  Better safe than sorry?

Our ethos is that every penny spent on your site should be justified by the value that it creates.  How much will the flashing lights, bells, whistles and stop-frame animation add to your bottom line?  Probably very little.  And yet they can easily constitute 80% of the cost.

We operate according to the 80:20 rule.  80% of the value can be obtained at 20% of the cost.  That is what you should aim for and that is where you should stop.  And if that sounds reasonable, then you've come to the right place.

Of course, if you're operating on the cutting edge of technology, you may need to follow the 101:200 Rule - to be 1% better than your competitors, you need to fork out 100% extra in costs.  (Or how about following the 110:1000 Rule?)  This may be necessary for competitively high-tech. sites pursuing trendy youth or wealth markets...

But for most businesses and organizations servicing most needs, 80:20 is a good ratio to keep in mind.  Don't try to do everything.  Concentrate on what you can do best.  Our prices reflect that balance, which is why we're 80% cheaper than most other web designers (where they even still reveal their prices online).

So that's all very well as a theory, but what does it mean in practice...?

Co-operation is the KEY to VALUE

Our approach is simple and honest. Let's cut to the chase. We have a simple two-stage blueprint for online success; and it's this:

  • You tell us what you want, that you can't already do for yourself; and
  • We do it.
But it won't work unless we honour the third and most important step:
  • We only do that; we do nothing else.
It sounds so simple, and it is! But this discipline changes everything... So what we suggest you do now is:

  1. Decide what your objectives are and stick to them.
  2. Especially if this is your first site: keep it simple! (This is going to be something that you can develop as you go along - and to a large extent, without incurring further fees.)
  3. Look at the objectives each of our packages is designed to satisfy and choose the cheapest one that meets all of your (present) needs:
  4. Then organize what you want;  and do what you can.  (It's going to be far cheaper if you prepare the text, because you are the one who best understands what you need to say; and send us any relevant photographs, leaflets, material you own.)
  5. Submit your order and pay your deposit (£10 - your only risk).
This approach isn't going to get you the flashiest, most gimmicky site on the web, but it is going to get you the best value for your money.

A £30 site isn't going to knock out Amazon. But, with a catchy name or a search engine listing, it will give your potential customers a place to find you, to obtain further contact details, see examples of your work, or whatever simple message you want to convey. And if that's all you want (for now), why spend more?

Let's define the site you need now, and build it. And - this is the key thing - let's do nothing else.
